Bidgely Selected as Technology Service Provider for Energy Theft Solution by Indian Government Ministry of Energy

Bangalore, Karnataka, India:

Global technology service provider, bidgelyhas launched an energy theft solution that harnesses the power of AI-based data analytics to detect and solve the problem of energy misuse in India.

The brainchild of data scientists at its Bangalore Engineering Center, this Bidgely solution reaffirms its commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat by solving the country’s energy theft problem. The Indian government has been quick to adopt smart meters and the solution unleashes AI-powered insights from meter data.

Bidgely was selected by REC Ltd(Previously Rural Electrification Company), a commitment from the Government of India to participate in the Ministry of Energy, GoI Technology Incubation Challenge Powerthon 2022, which was organized in collaboration with SINE Incubation Lab at IIT Bombay. From 200 applicants and 18 ultimate technology solution vendors chosen to participate, Bidgely was the only vendor selected for energy theft detection in support of the national Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) program to reduce losses across the India up to 15% by 2025.

Bidgely just launched Energy theft solution will demonstrate how AI-powered data analytics can detect and address energy misuse issues in India during a 4-month engagement with a utility. Meanwhile, Bidgely is working with a major central Indian utility – in conjunction with the World Bank – to further prove use cases for theft detection analytics.

“High levels of technical and commercial energy losses are a major financial concern for utilities – with 22 percent distributed energy is not accounted for – and energy theft is a major contributor. As India rolls out hundreds of millions of smart meters by 2030, leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities for this new wave of energy data will be key to supporting the goals of the Ministry of Energy. said Sh R Lakshmanan, CEO of REC Power. Development and Consultancy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of REC Limited.

With 17 patents and more than 40 global energy customers, Bidgely extends its energy analytics expertise to the Powerthon 2022 Energy Theft Challenge in India – enabling utilities to not only understand energy loss precisely and accurately, but also how to prevent further losses.

“Bidgely is acutely aware of the challenges in the Indian energy market through its engagement with key stakeholders and with much of our workforce operating in the region, including our data science and research and development,” said Gautam Aggarwal., Chief Revenue Officer of Bidgely. “We are thrilled to be able to demonstrate the power of intelligence behind the meter to improve billing efficiency for Discoms in India.”

Bidgely Energy Theft Solution

Based on industry-leading, non-intrusive load monitoring technology and advanced data analytics, Bidgely’s energy theft solution disaggregates customers’ energy consumption down to the device level . The information generated from this data is used to identify usage patterns over a period of time and detect anomalies associated with high probability flight trends. Bidgely’s solution addresses three specific energy theft use cases:

  • Misuse of tariffs – when a customer’s type of electricity use is mischaracterized and an incorrect lower tariff is applied, Bidgely accurately distinguishes between residential behavior and commercial behavior as well as a transition between the two.

  • Counter tampering – Bidgely leverages available energy consumption patterns, technical parameters and smart meter events to identify premises where the meter itself has been tampered with.

  • Direct flight – in cases where the meter is exceeded partially or completely to prevent consumption from being recorded, Bidgely identifies which devices are running and when to determine if the behavior is abnormal.
