On Sunday morning, gunmen attacked St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the seat of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, killing members of the congregation during the church service.
It was found that some corpses had been moved out of the church and many of the victims were at Owo Federal Medical Center for medical treatment.
A source said gunmen stormed the church during the service and opened fire on church members, killing some of them.
He said worshipers were caught off guard, adding that the number of casualties could be higher as some worshipers were taken to hospital.
He said the gunmen also used explosives in the church compound, but said most people were hit by gunfire.
The perpetrators reportedly fled the scene immediately after carrying out the murder, killing many people.
A nurse from Owo who spoke to Tribune Online on condition of anonymity said few medical personnel were on the ground tending to the injured at the hospital’s emergency unit.
